Catalogue of Plans of Abandoned Mines 1928 |

Catalogue of Plans of Abandoned Mines, 1928 .
PREFACE.
1. This catalogue comprises lists of plans of abandoned mines-
(a) deposited with the Mines Department voluntarily or in pursuance of statute,
(b) in private ownership of which particulars have been obtained by the courtesy of the holders.
In July, 1925, for the purposes of this catalogue, the Secretary for Mines made a widespread appeal for the deposition of plans of old workings not covered by the statutory requirements or for the supply of particulars where it was not desired to give up possession of the plans. This appeal has been very widely responded to, and particulars of such plans form a large part of the catalogue. The Secretary for Mines desires to express his gratitude to all who have made available plans or other information in their possession.
2. The present catalogue differs from the previous catalogue inasmuch as an attempt has been made to give additional information as to the locations of disused workings. No effort has been spared to make this information as complete and accurate as possible, but the Secretary for Mines realises that neither completeness nor absolute accuracy is obtainable. Therefore, though he hopes that the catalogue will be of use to those responsible for the safety of mining operations, its existence must not lessen their vigilance and the thoroughness of their search for plans and particulars of old workings suspected to exist, but not indicated, or possibly not accurately indicated, in this catalogue.
In this connection it is to be noted that the Committee appointed by the Secretary for Mines to advise as to the measures to be taken against the danger of inrush of water state in their Report (Report of the Departmental Committee on the Prevention of Dangers in Mines from Accumulations of Water or other Liquid Matter. (HMSO).
"The reliance which may be placed on old plans is limited it is seldom that records have been preserved to enable old plans to be checked and verified."
3. The names of a number of mines respecting which plans of workings have not been found appear in the body of the catalogue; the information has been compiled from published documents or other sources.
References to certain shafts and levels in respect of which neither names nor Plans have been traced are given under each County as an addendum. These references have been arranged alphabetically under Parishes.
A list of mining maps and sections held by the Department is also given under each County as an addendum (Addendum No.2).
4. A plan deposited under the Coal Mines Act, 1911, is not open to public inspection until after the expiration of ten years from the date of abandonment unless the written consent of the Owners has been obtained, or in pursuance of a licence granted by the Secre tary for Mines in the interests of safety only.
A plan deposited under the Metalliferous Mines Regulation Act, 1872, is not available for inspection without a licence of the Secre tary for Mines, until after the expiration of ten years from the date of receipt. In the case of a plan deposited under this Act, the date of receipt is given in addition to the date of abandonment.
5. Deposited plans which are open to inspection can be seen free of charge, by appointment, at the Mines Department between 10.30 and 12.30 and 2.30 and 4.30 (Saturdays 10.30-12.30) or at the offices of the Divisional Inspectors of Mine. The Mines Department is also willing to supply at a reasonable cost, copies of deposited plans which are open to inspection.
6. References in the catalogue entries do no necessarily imply that mines named have not been re-opened or that plans have been formally deposited in pursuance of the statutes.
7. Any supplementary information or notification of errors will be welcomed by the Mines Department which should also be informed of any change of ownership of plans.
8. The references in this catalogue include Plans received by the Mines Department up to the 31st October, 1928.
9. The Secretary for Mines regrets that, in the absence of facilities for access, it has not been possible to obtain particulars of Plans relating to disused workings in Lancashire (and probably also in other Counties) which he understands are held by Messrs. Doming & Morrison of 41, John Dalton Street, Manchester, and Messrs. Joseph Jackson & Sons, of 18, Wood Street, Bolton.
Mines Department, S.W.1. November, 1928.
EXPLANATORY REFERENCES TO CATALOGUE ENTRIES.
1. The scheme of cataloguing which has been adopted is, briefly, as follows Six Inch Scale Ordnance Survey Maps have been divided into 1.5 inch (0.75 mile) squares, lettered vertically and numbered horizontally. Reference letters and numbers in the catalogue show, approximately, the squares into which the workings fall. The date of the edition used for Official purposes is given, in brackets, against the number of each Map.
To locate the approximate position of an abandoned mine, on a piece of tracing paper, ruled into 1.5 inch squares. The horizontal squares numbered 1-12 and the vertical squares A-H. Place over the appropriate Map, and note the position of the reference squares quoted in the catalogue. This will show the approximate position of the workings as shown on the plan.
2. Initial letters have been used to indicate items of information given in each entry, and are as follows -
(a) The Parish or Parishes in which the workings are situated;
(b) The minerals worked, and, in cases of plans not held by the Mines Department, the approximate date of working, if known;
(c) The custodian of the plan if other than the Mines Department;
(d) References to the Ordnance Map squares.
3. Where a plan relevant to old workings is in the custody of the Mines Department, the official reference number is shown in leaded type after the name of the mine.
4. Where a mine has been known by two or more names, particulars of the plan are entered in one place and cross references have been inserted where necessary.
SUMMARISED EXPLANATIONS OF SYMBOLS.
For further information see previous.
(a) Names of Parishes in which workings situate.
(b) Minerals worked and names of seams (when known).
