The Wigan Metropolitan Borough was built on coal. At one time over half the male population was employed in the mining industry. This video traces the history of coal mining from small bell-pits employing only two or three people to the large collieries employing two or three thousand. Photographs, cine film and personal recollections of mining in the Wigan area give a fascinating insight to a time when blue scars and black diamonds were a common sight.
