NEW BOOK

BRIAN ELLIOTT spent his childhood in Carlton near Barnsley where his father worked at one of two collieries in the village. He left school at the age of fifteen and made an unsuccessful attempt to become a professional footballer, but studied partime to gain entrance to a teacher training college. Brian taught Geography for fourteen years at Royston Comprehensive School and then obtained a post in adult and community education at Rother Valley College, in Dinnington, near Rotherham. He gained on M.Phil in Local History. at the University of Sheffield in 1992. Brian took premature retirement from Rother Vale, where he was Head of the School of General Education, in 1999, and now works as A freelance writer and editor with a special interest in former coal mining communities He has written and edited more than 20 books on Barnsley and South Yorkshire history, including Barnsley Pits and Pitmen (Wharncliffe Books, 2001): and followed the acclaimed Aspects series of books on the theme of Discovering Local History.
