The National Database of Mining Deaths and Injuries in Great Britain
 

The database covers deaths and some injuries in coal, metalliferous and shale mines and quarries in Great Britain and Ireland. At present it contains over 120,000 names from 1850 to 1972.

NB. There is new material added on a monthly schedule.

WOMEN and the PITS
 

Before the 1842 Royal Commission reported, women worked down the mines. Later they worked on the surface and in recent years supported their miner husbands during bitter strikes only to emerge as a strong political force to keep the mines of Britain open.
